Theo’s - Hot Music, Cold Beer

By Tara Roberts

Behind its non-descript façade, Theo’s hides a closely guarded secret. The tiny pizza parlor on Old Highway 98 in Miramar Beach is home to one of the area’s truly gifted homegrown bands.

Theo’s is the place to gather on the weekends for good food and even better music. Tables pack the small interior with chairs crowding the stage at the front of the room. While there you can enjoy thin crust pizzas and hot sub sandwiches, and beer that is as cold as the food and music are hot.

The house band, the Loco Locals, bring their own brand of beach music to a mostly locals crowd Fridays and Saturdays nights. The band features a husband and wife team with lead singer “Blue Lew” Hogue on guitar and harmonica, and Nora Wixted-Hogue on keyboards, tambourine, guitar and vocals. The band also includes Butch Blasingame on bass, guitar and vocals.

It’s important when describing the band that you mention that they are headquartered in Miramar Beach. A crowd favorite, their own Miramar Beach song, sets off the regulars who sing along with the band, belting out the refrain with the band – “happy, happy dayo!”

The older clientele will recognize favorites from the their misspent youth while the younger crowd will just enjoy the great mix of blues, R&B, and rock and roll. Scattered among the band’s list of cover tunes are their own original songs. New visitors to Theo’s will feel right at home with these songs, because they still have that familiarity you feel when hearing an old favorite again.

Between sets music lovers can peruse the vast and eclectic catalog of album covers that decorate the walls from ceiling to floor. It’s almost a game to find records you had as a teenager, and remembering where you first heard those songs.

The crowd at Theo’s runs a little older than most beach bars, but families with children, and young adults are welcome. Song lyrics won’t make anyone blush, and everyone is encouraged to join in the fun.

Additional information
Theo’s is open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday they are open from 11 a.m. to midnight (kitchen closes at 10 p.m.). Sunday they open at 1 p.m. Theo’s does not have a full-service bar; they only serve beer and wine. For the young ones, they have a children’s menu.
