Camille’s: A Silver Lining at Silver Sands
By Tara Roberts
Camille’s Sidewalk Café is a welcome oasis in the madness known as Silver Sands Factory Stores in Destin. With more than 100 shops and eateries, Silver Sands is more than a shopping mall – it is a destination in itself.
Camille’s, with its shaded alfresco dining and bright welcoming interior tables, offers a quiet place to relax and have a delicious meal. It also doesn’t hurt that several of the staff speak with true Italian accents, giving the café a real European feel.
The café menu offers panini, wraps, sandwiches, and salads with names like Bangkok Thai, Sonoma Veggie, Club Nouveau, Mexican Daredevil, Paris Bistro and the Michelangelo. The sandwiches and wraps are all served with a side of tri-colored corn chips and fresh salsa.
Camille’s also has some of the best soups, either by the cup or bowl, on the Emerald Coast.
It is an insult to call the daily offering of Creamy Tuscan Tomato simple tomato soup. It is far more than that – it is Italy in a bowl! The rich, thick soup has a subtle flavor of basil along with chunks of tomato, and a creaminess that just melts in your mouth.
Broccoli and Cheese, Italian Wedding, and Hearty Beef soups, all equally as filling and delicious, are also available throughout the week.
A good choice is to order the “Create Your Own” special that includes a combination of any two selections of a half sandwich, a cup of soup, or house or Caesar salad.
Even something as mundane as iced tea is unique at Camille’s where diners can mix their own flavor by adding slices of fresh lemons, oranges or limes, or maraschino cherries that are provided at the drink station.
For morning shoppers Camille’s offers a breakfast menu featuring several different wraps filled with scrambled eggs, choice cheeses such as mozzarella, pepperjack, provolone and Swiss, and fresh vegetables and jasmine rice. A nice selection of fruit smoothies, cool treats anytime, are available throughout the day.
