Sarah K’s Gourmet – Gourmet Meals for Those on the Go
By Ian Smith
Going home after a long day at work and having to worry about what to cook for dinner can be a real hassle – I know that I get sick of it. However, there is good news for those who find themselves in this situation – Sarah K’s Gourmet in Destin offers takeout gourmet meals for people on the run.
Many of the food items available at Sarah K’s are partially cooked when you purchase them. Sound strange? It actually makes a lot of sense – when you take the food home, items that require preparation need cooking for 10 to 15 minutes in the oven to heat them up and prepare them for serving. This allows the food to be served hot and fresh. For added convenience, an instruction card comes with all meals requiring preparation.
The foods at Sarah K’s are made fresh daily, so you can be sure you are getting the freshest and best tasting selections possible. Choose from items, such as macaroni and cheese, green pea salad, chicken fingers, fresh baked dinner rolls, broccoli and cheese casserole, summer salad (mixed greens with strawberries, walnuts, and a homemade dressing), chicken salad, or chipotle lime tilapia. Sinful dessert items are available as well, such as the Destin cakes or the death by chocolate brownie. Some menu items are always available, like the crab cakes, but some foods vary periodically, so you’ll probably be surprised with new choices on different visits to the store. There is even a limited selection of wines and bottled beverages available to complement your meal.
There is no inside seating for eating on the premises, however, you can have the foods heated and packed for you in the store if you plan to eat them right away. I am partial to doing an occasional afternoon snack at Sarah K’s – I like to buy one of the crab cakes and enjoy it while sitting on the sidewalk bench in front of the store.
Sarah K’s is probably best known for its jumbo lump crab cakes, and these are so good they deserve special mention. As you can clearly tell, I am a fan of crab cakes. I have tried them at many different restaurants around the country, even some in Ocean City, Md. – right at the heart of crab country. They were excellent in Maryland, but I honestly believe that the crab cakes at Sarah K’s are the best I’ve ever had. Each of the large crab cakes has nearly half a pound of pure jumbo lump crabmeat with no breading filler. There is breading on the outside, but do not be deceived – this just helps hold the crabmeat inside in its place. These are the real deal and Sarah K’s has perfected them! If the large ones are too big for your tastes, they also come in a “mini” size.
As for cost, the prices of the foods available at Sarah K’s are reasonable for the portions and quality you receive. Many of the foods I’ve tried ranged between $5 and $6 per serving, and if you bought two or three different items, it would be enough to feed at least two or three people. The large crab cakes are $8.45 each.
If you’re on the run and need a fresh and tasty meal that is both quick and easy to prepare, give Sarah K’s Gourmet a try!
